Bully Burnham and what Labour doesn't want to talk about.

The EHRC Code of Practice attempting to segregate and exclude trans people from public life is now been imposed and immediately there are court cases about it all over the country, a sure sign that it is badly-drafted nonsense. The complete flap that the head of the EHRC got herself into on Channel 4 reinforced this. A piece of guidance supported by Labour that is already being challenged in the court before anyone has even had a wee has already discredited itself.

Of course Andy Burnham has kept his head down about this, preferring to talk about baps and rolls - which tells you more about the content of his character than any glossy (and expensive) social media ads.

But Burnham is where the buck stops.

The important thing here is that Burnham doesn't want you to know this, that is why he is keeping his head down. This is because of what Burnham, the rest of Labour, and its client media doesn't want to talk about; the fact that he can easily stop all this at any time, but is choosing not to. There are in fact, multiple ways he could undo the dishonest Supreme Court misjudgement, but he still chooses not to. He could have done this at any time and could do so at any time still, instead he chose to leave the EHRC Code's ministerial sponsor Bridget Philippson in her job, to see it imposed.

This is the quiet part in this farce. Burnham is choosing to bully trans people while doing everything he can to avoid being held accountable for it. Yet he is the one with the power to stop it, he is the bully. And bullies are always also cowards, so the fact that Burnham, and indeed the rest of the Labour Party, doesn't want to state clearly that he is choosing to do this that is the dishonest and cowardly part. Even those Labour MPs and party members who are opposed to the transphobic Code are not mentioning this. The dishonesty about where the responsibility for all this lies runs deep, Labour doesn't want to take responsibility for its own transphobia.

This is important because a Labour government is supposed to protect the weak against the strong, and all the transphobic measures imposed by Labour are produced by bigoted and hateful activism by the rich and powerful; the covertly-funded right-wing hate groups with deep pockets.

There is a name for this; class war.

Only this time in the class war Labour is firmly on the side of the rich and powerful, when it could have sided with those it was set up to protect. Of course this strongly suggests that when the chips are down Labour will do the same for other groups, it is well-known that those funding, supporting and promoting this transphobia are the same people aiming to end equal marriage, end safe and legal abortion, end equal adoption and IVF, pull down protections against violence against women and girls, including domestic violence and many other targets.

So when it comes to its policy of transphobic bullying, segregation and exclusion, the main priority for Labour and for Burnham, is to avoid the fact becoming widely known that it is all a choice. They are still hiding behind the Supreme Court misjudgement, distracting us from that is more important for Labour, and especially for Burnham, than anything else here.

Which points to a way forward for trans people.

We need to relentlessly pin the blame of Bully Burnham, spotlight him with it, highlight his culpability and responsibility, constantly remind everyone that he is the bully and not only a bully but a cowardly bully also.
