In 1995 a trans woman Tyra Hunter, was involved in a car crash in Washington DC, when another car ran a red light and collided with the one she was travelling in. Medics arriving on the scene stopped treating her when they found out she was transgender, with the result that she lost vital minutes of care at the scene. She died later at DC General Hospital. A subsequent inquest found that she would have had an 86% chance of survival had the medics not refused treatment.

A senior Labour MP yesterday published a tweet strongly implying that she is opposed to trans people accessing healthcare in mixed-sex facilities. This is my email to Any Burnham. He has a decision to make, either withdraw the whip or admit that the objective of his policies is the total elimination of trans people.

Dear Mr Burnham,

A senior MP in Your party yesterday tweeted that she was objecting to trans people using a mixed-sex A&E facility. This is very revealing and necessitates a response from you, in my opinion she should have the whip withdrawn immediately.

A large number of anti-trans exclusion/trans segregation measures have been imposed by you in the three months since becoming Prime Minister - more than all other Prime Ministers combined. They have all been enforced on the pretext of “protecting (cis) women”, even though cis women are not asking for this kind of protection; it is a kind of “protection” that, for a number of reasons, both practical and political, increases the danger for cis women. These tweets have revealed that the policies you have imposed since becoming leader – hospital segregation, a new Section 28 for Trans kids, and the EHRC Trans Segregation “guidance” – are not intended to have any other purpose other than to eliminate, exclude and discriminate against trans people and make it impossible for us to take part in civic life, including remaining in employment. Your ruling that trans people should be accommodated in the wrong hospital wards will result in many trans people not obtaining the healthcare they need. A trans woman with a vagina and breasts who looks exactly like a cis woman will be in very great danger for the entire time she is there. The implications of this tweet reveal that the aim of your policies is to deny trans people access to healthcare entirely, forcing us into apartheid hospitals.

Trans people have been trying to communicate this to policymakers, especially MPs but we have been systematically ignored and you have pressed ahead with the implementation of your three new exclusionary/segregationist policies, all in the three months since you became PM. It appears you intend to follow these up with what effectively amounts to a Trump-style military ban.

This tweet reveals the true aim behind your policies as this MP sees them, revealing them to most definitely be anti-trans policies under the guise of “protecting women”. Stating that trans people should be excluded from a mixed-sex space shows that, for this MP, trans exclusion is quite evidently the aim.

So you need to act on this now or you will be admitting that this is the aim of your party’s anti-trans policies, you will be admitting that they are designed specifically for the purpose of trans exclusion rather than anything else. Your failure to remove the whip from this MP will constitute your admission that the objective of your anti-trans policies is the suppression and elimination of trans people, including children, while painting a target on our backs. Your failure to act now will constitute the fullest and clearest admission that this is the case.

Inaction will speak volumes.

Kind regards,

Dr Natacha Kennedy
